Ron Paul on Iran

Written on December 12, 2007 – 7:12 pm | by Chris Schaffer |

Ron Paul had many interesting comments, but this passage in particular caught my attention:

The truth is Iran is being asked to do the logically impossible feat of proving a negative. They are being presumed guilty until proven innocent because there is no evidence with which to indict them. There is still no evidence that Iran, a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, has ever violated the treaty’s terms – and the terms clearly state that Iran is allowed to pursue nuclear energy for peaceful, civilian energy needs. The United States cannot unilaterally change the terms of the treaty, and it is unfair and unwise diplomatically to impose sanctions for no legitimate reason.

Regardless of how much you like or dislike Iran, Ron Paul has a point. Iran is allowed to explore nuclear technology. They can pursue it for civilian energy production even if doing so makes it much easier for them to produce a weapon. We are not the single vote on the international board.

Hopefully we will take time to step back and evaluate our diplomatic ties to every nation and take careful time to consider or foreign policy. The right to freedom at home cannot come at the cost of depriving the world of the same.

I am an outside observer. It seems to me that there is less and less freedom in America every day.

    You have no idea.

The trend you have noticed is true. There is a definite downward spiral in our freedom.

Hopefully this can be corrected before it is too late.
